Ethiopian National Team
Ethiopia’s national team, nicknamed ‘The Wayla Antelopes’ they were among the pioneers of international football on the continent, participating in the inaugural CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 1957 and winning the 1962 tournament on home soil.
The Ethiopian National Football Team received the first historic award from the Ethiopian Football Federation at a ceremony held at Intercontinental Hotel Tuesday.
Following their return to the African Cup of Nations after 31 years, many stakeholders promised to reward Walias so as to boost the morale of the team. It is to be recalled that prior to the first game with Sudan at Omdurman, the Federation promised to give inspiring award to the players provided that they qualify for the 29th edition of African Cup of Nations. The Federation awarded all team members in accordance with their contribution.
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) and Heineken, parent company of Harar-based Bedele Brewery, signed a 2-year deal worth 24 million Ethiopian Birr ($1.3 million) to sponsor the Ethiopian national football team.
The Walias will take part in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa, following a 31 year absence.
The deal was signed by Sahlu Gebrewold, President of the EFF and Mr. Johan Doyer, GM of Heineken in Ethiopia, at a ceremony held at the Addis Hilton here in the capital.
